What is acupuncture? What conditions does acupuncture treat? How many treatments will I need? |
What is acupuncture and how does it work? Acupuncture uses fine needles to access and redirect the Qi (pronounced "chee") in order to bring the body back to a state of health. Acupuncture is the use of very fine needles, which are not much thicker than a hair, inserted into precise locations on the body to obtain a therapeutic/medicinal effect. There are several theories as to how it works. One example is that the needles are placed in locations near nerves that cause the body to send signals to the brain, releasing endorphins and creating a relaxation response. What conditions does acupuncture treat? Please refer to the extensive list of commonly treated conditions, but if you have a concern about how acupuncture can benefit your particular condition, please take advantage of our free initial consultation with the acupuncturist. Please call or email to schedule your appointment.617.558.3308 It is important to note that acupuncture needles are not at all like hypodermic needles. Instead, they are extremely thin, about the width of a human hair, and very flexible. When needled by a skilled acupuncturist, minimal sensation is felt, maybe only the slightest sensation of pressure or a dull feeling around the point of insertion. Most patients find acupuncture to be wonderfully relaxing and often fall asleep on the table. Acupuncture is highly regarded as a form of health care because it has extremely few adverse effects. Acupuncture is safe when practiced in the hands of a licensed professional. Practitioners must pass a national licensing examination and meet all state licensing requirements before they can legally perform acupuncture. The Committee on Acupuncture certifies us for Clean Needle Technique. We use disposable, sterile needles. How many treatments does it take to see results? Many patients report feeling improvement in the first few treatments. Individuals respond differently to acupuncture. An average course of treatment is between 12-15 sessions, variability based on individual presentation and chronicity of symtpoms. Most patients report an overall sense of well-being and reduction in stress after the first treatment. What is Chinese Herbal Medicine? Chinese Herbal Medicine is comprised of over 4ooo substances that are combined into a tea formula. Using roughly 12 of these ingredients, the practitioner specifically tailors the formula to treat an individual client's symptoms. Unlike western medicine, with a single formula, multiple symptoms can be treated effectively with one tea and without side effects. What is Tuina? (Pronounced "tweh na") Tuina is a Chinese massage system that is renowned for its remarkable results in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. |
